Experiential Learning: Days of Discovery in Toronto
The Days of Discovery program provides a rich experiential learning opportunity for RMI students and an opportunity for companies in Toronto to introduce future graduates to the wide spectrum of careers available in the industry. Eight to ten students, accompanied by an RMI professor, will spend three days in Toronto participating in meetings, Q&A sessions, office visits and tours. Students have the opportunity to expand their career options by garnering insights from industry professionals and becoming familiar with different aspects of the industry. This networking experience will help students understand different roles, and develop an awareness of the expectations and realities of working in the risk management and insurance sector.

“Over reading week, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in Days of Discovery in Toronto, an immersive experience organized by the Association of Risk Management and Insurance and the RMI Faculty at the Haskayne School of Business. This trip provided a firsthand look at the inner workings of the insurance and risk management industry, from underwriting, claims, operations, and broking to reinsurance and enterprise risk. We had the privilege of meeting professionals from Berkshire Hathaway, MNP, Liberty Mutual Canada, Lloyd's, Markel, Marsh, Aon, CNA Insurance, CIBC, Deloitte, and BMO.
One of the most insightful takeaways for me was seeing how different companies approach underwriting discipline and risk appetite. While some firms adapt their strategies based on market conditions, others remain firm in their principles—regardless of whether it's a soft or hard market. It was fascinating to see how these decisions shape not only a company’s portfolio but also the broader industry landscape.
Beyond the technical knowledge, this experience reinforced how dynamic and evolving this field is. From emerging cyber risks to shifting geopolitical challenges, every conversation highlighted the industry's adaptability and the critical role of risk professionals in navigating uncertainty.
A huge thank you to Noreen I., Wayne Irvine, Anne Kleffner, Darius Delon, MBA FCIP CRM RIMS-CRMP, and Martin Halek for their dedication in organizing this trip and preparing us to make the most of every visit. I’m also incredibly grateful to the professionals who took the time to share their expertise and career journeys with us—your insights were truly invaluable.
I left this experience with a deeper understanding of the industry, meaningful connections, and an even stronger passion for pursuing a career in risk management and insurance. Excited for what’s ahead!”
